Custom reception desk: the drawing is the product.
A custom desk is not a bigger catalogue desk. It is a drawing that has to be approved, sampled and then built, and every hour saved on the drawing is paid for twice at the end.
The drawing is the product
A custom desk is bought as a drawing long before it is bought as furniture. The drawing carries the width, the working side, the counter height, the storage and the cable route, and each one becomes expensive once the material is cut.
What separates a smooth custom order from a painful one is rarely the workshop. It is whether the drawing that was approved is the drawing that was built, which is why a buyer approves a dimensioned drawing rather than a render and keeps the revision with the order.
What a drawn build adds
It adds fit. A wall with a column, a return or a low bulkhead can be worked around instead of filled with a gap, and in a small salon that is worth more than any finish upgrade.
It adds integration. A card terminal, a monitor arm, a lockable cupboard and a lit front can be designed in rather than clamped on. It also adds a sample, which is where a finish and an edge are checked in the hand while a mistake is still cheap.
Where custom goes wrong
Three failures account for most of the trouble: a working side left unmarked, a finish approved from a photograph, and a cable route assumed. All three are drawing failures, prevented by a dimensioned drawing and a physical sample.
Spec sheet
The sheet summarises the approved drawing; a value from your room says so.
| Field | This build | What the value decides |
|---|---|---|
| Overall width | Per approved drawing | Taken from the wall at three points, with the largest measurement used |
| Depth and return | Per approved drawing | Sets the walkway and whether a second work position fits |
| Counter height | Per approved drawing | Transaction height on the client side, working height on the staff side |
| Geometry | Straight, curved, L shaped or U shaped, per drawing | The curve consumes floor at the ends, so it is drawn against the door swing |
| Working top | Solid surface, quartz, sintered stone, timber or laminate, per finish | Joint position and edge profile follow the material, not the drawing |
| Carcass | MDF or plywood with an edged face; steel subframe where the span needs it | A long unsupported span needs the subframe, and it changes the packing |
| Cable route | Internal route to a floor duct or a back panel exit, with a brush plate | An internal route needs the plate position on the drawing |
| Sample round | One physical sample at the approved finish, per project | The sample fixes the finish and the edge, and it is kept as the reference |
The sheet is a summary, not a substitute for the drawing. Values that read per project are confirmed against your room before the order is placed.
Where a drawn desk fits, and where it does not
It fits a room with a problem a catalogue cannot solve: a column at the end of the wall, a return that closes a corner, a reception that doubles as a retail counter, a height set for a seated client. It also fits the interior where the desk is the one piece that has to look deliberate.
It does not fit a first shop opening in three weeks that has not measured the wall. A drawn desk and a rushed decision are a bad pair, because every change after the drawing is reissued costs more than the change.
Nor does it fit a room where nobody can say who works from which side. That is not a furniture question, and a drawn desk carries the uncertainty into the workshop.
How buyers customise a drawn desk, and what each option changes
Each row is the thing the option moves. None of them is a price, because a drawn desk is quoted from the drawing that carries it.
- Geometry
- Changes the floor area occupied and the sightline from the door. A curve is drawn against the door swing, not chosen from a photograph.
- Counter height and transaction top
- Changes the greeting posture and the internal carcass height. It is the one dimension that cannot be adjusted on site.
- Front treatment
- Changes the approval route: slat and fluted fronts need a sample, veneer a batch match, paint a sheen reference.
- Storage layout
- Changes the internal carcass and the packing. A lockable cupboard adds a lock position and a hinge spec to the drawing.
- LED and driver
- Changes service access and the electrical route. The driver goes where it can be reached, not where it is easiest to hide.
- Packing split
- Changes the delivery route. A long one piece top decides whether the desk goes up a stair or through a window.
What to confirm before you approve a drawn desk sample
6 checks on the custom builds build before the order is approved.
- A dimensioned drawing with a revision number, not a render, signed off with the wall measurements on it.
- The working side and the cabinet side marked, with the door swing and walkway drawn.
- A physical sample of the front treatment and the top edge, seen in the room's own light.
- The cable and data entry points marked, with the brush plate position on the drawing.
- The LED driver location and service panel, checked for reach with the desk against the wall.
- The packing split and the delivery route, including any stair, lift or door restriction.
Questions that come back before the order
Short answers to the questions that arrive with the first email.
How close can a drawing follow an irregular wall?
Closer than a held desk, but not to the millimetre of a bowed wall. The usual answer is a scribe or a filler at the wall, which keeps the visible front square.
Can the curve change after the drawing is approved?
It becomes a new drawing and a new sample if the change is visible. A change to internal storage is cheaper, because it does not move the front face.
Who is responsible for the wall measurement?
Whoever signs the drawing. That is why the drawing is issued with the measurements on it: the number on the paper is the number built.
